The rescue of USAF F-4 WSO Lt. Roger Locher during Operation Linebacker I in May 1972 is one of the most storied rescue missions of the Vietnam War. However the pilot of the Phantom who was KIA when the aircraft was shot down, Major Bob Lodge, received little attention amongst the fanfare of the successful rescue of Locher.
Now, Rep. August Pfluger (R-Texas) is at the forefront of an effort to award the Congrssional Medal of Honor to Major Lodge. It is his contention that Major Lodge deliberately died in crash of the Phantom, to prevent his vast knowledge of classified programs and systems from falling into the hands of the North Vietnamese, who would have then provided the invaluable intelligence to the Soviet Union.
