On this date 50 years ago our country was enmeshed in the eighth year of our war in the quagmire of Vietnam. At home, Americans were sharply divided on how to resolve the dilemma.  President Nixon addressed the nation and the world in a 37-minute “fire side chat” speech, “Vietnamization,” that became known as the “Silent Majority” speech. His popularity blossomed to 77% public approval of his handling of the war following the speech.
